Monsignori !!!!

The Holy Father, on Bishop Finn's petition, has bestowed the highest presbyterial honor Protonotary Apostolic, upon the pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel. Monsignor William J. Blacet has been a monsignor since 1968 and now in his 60th year of priestly service. In the dozen years since he was "demoted" from Cathedral Rector, has guided the little midtown church to which he was exiled from insolvency, deterioration, and certain closure to a thriving parish of young families and a refuge (novus ordo) from liturgical abuse and heterodox preaching. When he started, Good Counsel was a quiet place--partially shagged-out in the 1970s, and populated by just a few gray heads. Now, the church is mostly restored, the pews and vestibule are crammed full of children, and the baptismal font and cnfessionals are in regular service. People drive 50 miles or more to be a part of the Good Counsel family, and only leave when cross over to the traditional Mass, or they move far, far away. God bless Msgr. Blacet.

At the same time, His Holiness appointed ten other diocesan priests to his household clergy (only two of whom I know personally or by reputation):

  • Reverend Monsignor A. Robert Murphy, Vicar General, Prelate of Honor
  • Reverend Monsignor Bradley S. Offutt, Chancellor (and key player in the restoration of Old St. Patrick's Oratory), Prelate of Honor
  • Reverend Monsignor Robert S. Gregory, Rector of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Prelate of Honor
  • Reverend Monsignor Richard M. Dierkes, Pastor of St. Joseph Co-Cathedral, Prelate of Honor
  • Reverend Monsignor Donald S. Miller, Chaplain to His Holiness
  • Reverend Monsignor Ralph L. Kaiser, Pastor of the Church of the Santa Fe, Chaplain to His Holiness
  • Reverend Monsignor John E. Leitner, Chaplain to His Holiness
  • Reverend Monsignor Lawrence A. Speichinger, Chaplain to His Holiness
  • Reverend Monsignor Joseph A. Mancuso, Pastor of St. Andrew Parish, Chaplain to His Holiness
  • Reverend Monsignor R. William Caldwell, Pastor of St. Ann Parish, Excelsior Springs, Chaplain to His Holiness

According to the Old St. Patrick website (click on News and Events) These are the first Monsignori appointed from our diocese since 1968. Since then, of course, great care has been taken to appear egalitarian and maintain a good show to cover for the polyester-clad, modernist elite who've been officing on Gillham Road. How happy it is to see Bishop Finn returning to a fine tradition and honoring his priests in this manner!

Your just have to love the prospect of 10 more cassocks with violet piping and birettas with violet tassles. Hopefully the 10 new Monsignori will take a cue from Msgr. Blacet, who returned to wearing his piped cassock and biretta just a few years ago.

Msgr. Mancuso at St. Andrews is a blessing of God. His homilies are always replete with all the kinds of subjects conservative Catholic writers/thinkers lament as no longer extant in most homilies. He beats around no bushes. He just calmly lays it on the line without compromise. Yet, he's nice about it.

Come visit. You might not want to leave.

Monsignori. Is that really the plural form? If it's not, we ought to make it so.

Does Msgr Mancuso suffer altar girls?

Yes, he does.

We got 'em back a few years ago when Abp. Kelleher took over from Abp. Strecker. The first to be created was Mons. Heliodor Mejak of Holy Family. Someone asked him why him? He said he guessed it was because he had outlived everybody else!

Just a note of clarification on dress of these new msgrs. The black biretta with violet pom is now only reserved for certain canons. The ceremonial of bishops prescribes the black biretta with black pom. Also, hopefully we will see the distinction of the msgrs. by the piping of there house cassocks. (black w/ violet for chaplains, and black w/ amaranth red for p of honor and protonatary ap's and a completely violet choir cassock for solemn occasions) This is so exciting for our diocese and what a wonderul honor for Msgr. Blacet and all his wonderful work! Maybe we can get his to where the violet caqssock as well now.

Must avoid parishes with altar girls; too confusung for my young children. The Church may now officially tolerate that abuse; doesn't mean I must. I'll stick, like Curmudgeon, to the old Mass at St. Philippine/Blessed Sacrament or Old St. Pat's, and when necessary or appropriate for family reasons, to a N.O. parish where there aren't things going on that I have to explain away.

I heard that Chicago's House of Hanson is in town this week to take measurements for the new Monsignors; anyone else in the clerical state (or in formation for it) and who's ready for a decent cassock maight catch them while they're here. You probably ought to call the chancery for details; I'd guess that Msgr Murphy's or Msgr. Offut's secretary could say when and where.

Unfortunately, some of us leave Good Counsel for other reasons. For us, we loved the parish, but intend to put our children in Catholic school. Since Good Counsel's only "school" is the group of homeschoolers (I mean absolutely no disrespect here, I count many of them as friends), we changed to St. Andrews. Not perfect, but Fr. Mancuso is a wonderful pastor who, as cranky said, pulls no punches. I don't like altar girls either, but it is not disobedience to have them, and of my options, this is best for our family. We do miss the lovely Good Counsel Mass though!

Msgs Gregory is the finest of men. A treasure of the diocese.
