Wuerl proposed to succeed McCarrick?

The nice thing about rumors on episcopal appointments is that they're almost never true.

Especially comforting with regards to the latest one.

You remember him, don't you? If not, click here.

Were this rumor true, it would be a good indicator that Benedict XVI's reign will be an unhappy one and he can't gain control of the curia that has been more-or-less doing its own bidding since before the beginning of his predecessor's reign.

  1. Bishop Wuerl isn't my favorite episcopos either, but he's nowhere near as bad as you make him out to be. Sure, he's a little too fond of having his picture taken and his liturgical tastes leave something to be desired (James Chepponis *yuck*), but he's a thoroughly orthodox guy. He's written some excellent catechetical material and he takes pretty good care of his diocese. Would I like to see him be a little tougher on dissidents and malcontents in Pittsburgh? Of course I would. Then again, unlike him, I wouldn't have to face filling vacancies in the midst of a vocations crisis.

Anyhow, cut the guy some slack. He's no Mahoney. ;)

P.S. I wasn't thrilled with how he handled the Eucharist controversy, either, but if that's the worst he ever does, I won't lose sleep over it.

  2. Well, lose some sleep! Wuerl is the guy who's trying to gag the few Bishops who have spoken and acted clearly with respect to Catholic public figures who thumb their noses at church teachings. See my link in the original post.
